CHENNAI: The revolutionary sports bike that changed the way 150cc motorcycles were looked at in India, around a decade ago, has got a major update. The ever-popular Yamaha YZF-R15's all-new Version 3.0 was unveiled at the Auto Expo last month.

We recently got to test ride the latest version at the Madras Motor Race Track and here's what thought of the bike.

The new R15 looks completely different and sharper than both the previous versions. The front body fairing gets inspiration from the new-generation of the Yamaha superbikes, the R1 and the R6. Besides the sleek LED headlamps, the centre air duct gives also contributes to providing an aggressive face to the bike.

The new fuel tank looks muscular as compared to its predecessor and it is also inspired by the bigger R series bikes. The bike also gets an R1 inspired all-digital instrument cluster which also gets a gearshift assist light. The bike also gets a USB charging port, however, it comes as an optional extra like the high-performance rear Metzeler tyre and the Daytona exhaust kit.
The R15 is sharper and sportier, and the seats provide better comfort. There is better cushioning, as well as room to sit, especially for the pillion rider.

The fuel injection works precisely, providing a great response when needed. The engine refinement is quite impressive and gives a linear feel to the power delivery. Vibrations are lesser than the previous motor but they are still there, leaving a scope for more improvement. The slipper clutch comes as boon on the track, while it will enhance the road use of the bike as well.
The bike gets front and rear disc brakes as before. We didn't get to use the rear brake much on the track, however, the front one provides adequate stopping power. The bike still misses on the anti-lock braking system (ABS) which is a much-needed feature in a performance bike like this.

It is a tough challenge to update a motorcycle which is already a hit with users. But after riding the latest avatar, we can say that Yamaha has done a great job and the new model definitely surpasses the riding pleasure delivered by its predecessor.
